Introduction to the Financial Markets Authority (FMA)

The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) is New Zealand’s government agency responsible for regulating financial services and securities markets. Its role includes enforcing securities laws, financial reporting standards, and company law to ensure market integrity and investor protection.

The FMA regulates:

  • Securities exchanges, financial advisers, brokers, auditors, and trustees
  • Issuers of financial products, including KiwiSaver and superannuation schemes

It also jointly oversees designated settlement systems with the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) and collaborates with the Council of Financial Regulators to maintain financial stability and promote fair, efficient markets.
