About Barings
Founded in 1762 and operating for over 250 years, Barings is a global investment management firm that was originally a merchant bank. Its current operations as an institutional investment manager span more than 17 countries and it manages hundreds of billions of dollars in assets across various asset classes such as credit, real estate, private markets, and sustainable investments. Barings is known worldwide for its disciplined investment process and expertise in credit, along with its strong commitment to integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations into its investment process.
Company History
Barings began its life as a company known as John and Francis Baring & Co., which was established in 1762 and eventually renamed Baring Brothers & Co. The company was involved in some of the most significant historical transactions in the world, including financing the United States government for the purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803. In 1995, Barings collapsed due to excessive losses incurred from unauthorized trading activities and subsequently was eventually purchased by ING.
In 2016, Barings merged four affiliates of the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) and repositioned itself as an asset management company that provides modern investment solutions to meet the needs of both individual and institutional investors. Barings has its corporate headquarters in London and is also headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, and has operations in 17 international locations.
Barings has developed comprehensive institutional asset management services to serve institutional and wholesale investors, including pension plans, life insurance companies, sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and high-net-worth individuals. Barings provides a variety of asset classes to its customers, including:
Private credit
Public fixed income
Real estate debt & equity

Structured finance (CLOs, CDOs)
Barings also manages Barings BDC, Inc., which is a publicly traded Business Development Corporation (BDC) that invests in U.S. middle market companies.Barings maintains a strong global reach with offices in 17 countries and uses proprietary analytics and climate-risk tools to incorporate ESG factors into all investment strategies. The foundation of Barings' current business model is disciplined investment processes, deep experience in the credit and real estate markets, and complete integration of ESG throughout the firm.
While Barings is primarily focused on serving institutional and affluent investors, the publicly traded BDC shares of Barings provide the best access for the broader investment public.
