Register says
Order of Registration issued

Finding

A foreign board of trade order of registration, issued on 5 November 2019, allowing EEX members and other US participants to enter orders directly into its trade matching system. The CFTC granted it on the basis that EEX has the attributes of an established, organised exchange under home-country oversight comparable to its own supervision of US designated contract markets. Client protection: A US regulator's positive finding on the quality of the exchange and of its home supervision. It governs market access for member firms, not retail client protection. Effective: 05 Nov 2019.

Most Popular Questions

Yes. Passing the EEX trader exam is a precondition of admission, and system training is mandatory as well. The exam costs 200 EUR and the mandatory system training 250 EUR. A two-day comprehensive exchange trading course that includes the exam costs 2,000 EUR per person on site or 1,500 EUR online, and a voluntary preparatory workshop is available for 400 EUR.

The switchboard at the company's head office, Augustusplatz 9, 04109 Leipzig, Germany, is +49 341 2156-0. Enquiries are routed by desk: trading@eex.com for the derivatives market and gas@eex.com for natural gas, both of which also handle trade cancellation; technology@eex.com for customer connectivity; membership@eex.com for exchange membership; and surveillance@eex.com, or +49 341 2156-560, for market surveillance. There is no live chat, and support is available in English and German.

No. EEX is a wholesale exchange whose markets are open only to companies admitted as trading participants, and it publishes no retail account, no deposit page and no trading app of its own. Anything of that kind offered in the EEX name does not come from European Energy Exchange AG.

Trading costs are charged per unit traded and sit on top of the annual membership fee. EEX Power Futures cost 0.00750 EUR per MWh for week, month, quarter and year contracts and 0.01500 EUR per MWh for day and weekend contracts, GB Power Futures 0.00375 GBP per MWh, and Nordic System Price Futures 0.00250 EUR per MWh. Volume rebates on power products run at 25 per cent above 10 TWh and 50 per cent above 15 TWh of monthly volume. Front-end, connection, market data and reporting fees are billed separately, and every fee in the price list is quoted exclusive of VAT.

EEX offers no MetaTrader, cTrader or other retail platform. Its standard front end is EEX TT Screen, which runs entirely in a browser with no installation and has companion mobile apps for iOS and Android, at 200 EUR per user per month. Alongside it are EEX Trayport Joule, an installed desktop application at 200 EUR per user per month, the Eurex T7 GUI at 625 EUR per participant per month over the internet, and the browser-based M7 Auction System for emissions spot auctions. Position management and clearing-side risk limits are handled in the Eurex Clearing GUI and the T7 Clearer GUI.

Admission is a corporate process, not an account opening. An applicant must show liable equity of at least 50,000 EUR, waived only for Primary Auction Only membership, be recognised as a trading participant by the clearing house ECC, evidence the personal reliability and professional qualifications of its management, build a technical connection to the trading systems, complete know-your-customer checks and pass the EEX trader exam. It must also appoint a Clearing Bank and sign a non-clearing member agreement. The criteria are set out in the EEX Exchange Rules and the German Exchange Act.

EEX prices access as an annual exchange membership, in six packages. Full Membership costs 37,000 EUR a year, Power Plus 22,000 EUR, Natural Gas Plus 20,000 EUR, and Environmental and Emerging Markets 5,000 EUR, reduced to 2,500 EUR for trading emission allowances on the spot market only. Primary Auction Only membership and nEHS Auction and Sale Only membership carry no membership fee. New trading participants pay nothing for the quarter in which they are admitted and for the four quarters after it.

Yes, by phone and email in English and German, but there is no live chat. Support is organised by desk rather than through one help line: the Leipzig switchboard is +49 341 2156-0, with separate numbers and mailboxes for market operations and trade cancellation, customer connectivity, market data and reporting services, exchange membership, the registries and market surveillance. Several of the market operations and auction hotlines are recorded lines. The exchange also publishes a detailed FAQ at .

EEX trades wholesale energy and environmental commodities: power, natural gas, emission allowances and agricultural products, across the spot and derivatives markets. It offers no forex and no margin product, because access is by corporate exchange membership rather than through a leveraged trading account, and none of its six membership packages carries a leverage ratio. Trading costs are charged per unit traded instead, for example 0.00750 EUR per MWh on EEX Power Futures for week, month, quarter and year contracts, with volume rebates of 25 per cent above 10 TWh and 50 per cent above 15 TWh of monthly volume.

None. EEX publishes no deposit or withdrawal channel, because it is a wholesale exchange that holds no client money and runs no cashier. Exchange fees, covering transaction, membership, reporting, technical and training charges, are debited by clearing through the trading participant's own Clearing Member, and all exchange transactions are cleared and settled by the clearing house ECC. A participant must appoint a Clearing Bank and sign a non-clearing member agreement before it can trade at all.

European Energy Exchange AG is a German exchange company rather than a retail broker, so the question works differently than it would for a forex or CFD firm. The company publishes its registration as HRB 18409 in the commercial register of the Leipzig Local Court, and admission to trade is governed by the EEX Exchange Rules and the German Exchange Act. A company registration is not a financial services licence, and no retail trading licence is recorded for EEX. On safety, the exchange holds no client money and runs no cashier: fees are debited through each participant's own Clearing Member and all transactions are cleared and settled by the clearing house ECC.
