FTD's About us page lists negative balance protection, which means you cannot lose more than the money in your account. The contract says the opposite: if a loss wipes out your balance, you owe FTD the shortfall.
Negative balance protection is a limit that stops you owing more than you put in. Without it, one fast market move can leave you owing the broker money on top of your deposit.
Why this matters
A fast move against you can leave you owing FTD more than you ever paid in. The Risk Warning page in FTD's footer repeats the company address under its Leverage/Margin Risk heading. The warning is not on that page at all.
Exhibit 1Every flagged clause gets its own number so you can point at this one. The number does not change, so a link to it keeps working.CriticalHow much this clause can cost you, in our reading. Critical can take your money or your profit. Warning can delay or limit it. Notice is simply worth knowing before you sign.Harder than usualHow ordinary this wording looks next to the contracts we read. This is our reading of the clause, not a count of other brokers.
you may be required to pay substantial additional funds at short notice but if you fail to do so within the required time, your investment position may be liquidated at a loss to you and you will be liable for any remaining deficit in your trading account.
Firms licensed by the FCA or CySEC must give retail clients negative balance protection, so a retail account cannot go below zero. FTD's contract makes you liable for the deficit, and FTD holds neither licence.
FTD is not licensed by these regulators, so this is a comparison of practice, not a finding of any breach.
- Worse together with Exhibit 9Read these two clauses together. Each one costs more because the other exists.FTD can raise your margin requirement without notice, close the positions the change left short, and then bill you for what the closure did not cover.
