Is Schroders a scam?

Confirmed scamHIGH confidenceClone of Schroders (Schroder Investment Management (Japan) Limited)
Updated September 17, 2026
Clone / brand impersonation

Yes, and the first thing to understand is that this site was not the real Schroders. The websites on this record, schroders-jp.co and schroders.click, copied the name, the marketing text and the Japanese registration number of Schroder Investment Management (Japan) Limited, a genuine Tokyo asset manager. The real Schroders group trades at schroders.com, is authorised by the FCA, and is the victim here rather than the subject. We assess the risk of fraud as high for the two impersonating sites.

  • The footer of schroders-jp.co published the registration 関東財務局長(金商)第90号. That number belongs to Schroder Investment Management (Japan) Limited, a different company, registered since 30 September 2007 and based at Otemachi, Tokyo.
  • The same footer displayed NFA: 0563282. No firm carries that ID on the National Futures Association register, and all 20 genuine Schroder group entities listed there carry entirely different numbers.
  • The companion site schroders.click sold retail FX margin trading under the Schroders name. The registration it leaned on is an asset management registration and does not permit that business.
  • The FCA has published a clone firm warning for Schroders since 21 November 2019, updated 3 April 2025, listing more than twenty counterfeit Schroders websites. Schroders itself publishes a notice warning that sites outside schroders.com are not authorised by it.
  • The site advertised 50 years of history in Japan. Its own infrastructure first appears in March 2024, and both domains have since been given up and no longer resolve.

Risk scorecard

Each area is scored 0 (clean) to 10 (worst). Higher means more risk.

Worst area: Critical
SeverityLowModerateHighCritical

Regulation

7/10 · High

No licence of its own. It displayed another company's Japanese registration and an NFA number that matches no firm on the register.

Identity & transparency

10/10 · Critical

Every element of the published identity, entity name, registration number and association memberships, belonged to a different company. No genuine operator was ever disclosed.

Withdrawals & conduct

4/10 · Moderate

No fund integrity complaints could be tied to these two addresses, which reflects how briefly they ran rather than any verified good conduct.

Reputation

8/10 · Critical

No organic footprint of its own, against a brand carrying a standing FCA clone warning and the genuine firm's own impersonation notice. Those name other addresses, so not the top of the scale.

Website claims

10/10 · Critical

A borrowed registration number, a non existent NFA ID, 50 years of history it did not have, and marketing copy lifted from the genuine firm.

Operational history

9/10 · Critical

Infrastructure first evidenced March 2024 and abandoned within months, while advertising a 50 year track record.

Who they are

A quick desk file on the company behind the brand.

  • Brand: Schroders, used without permission. The genuine group is Schroders plc, listed in London and trading at schroders.com.
  • Legal entity: none of its own. The site published シュローダー・インベストメント・マネジメント株式会社, which is another company.
  • Registered: no company registration of its own could be established anywhere.
  • Website: schroders-jp.co (main) and schroders.click. Neither resolves any longer and no registration record exists for either.
  • Only licence: none. It displayed 関東財務局長(金商)第90号, which belongs to Schroder Investment Management (Japan) Limited, and NFA 0563282, which matches no firm on the NFA register.
  • Offers: retail FX margin trading with zero advertised commissions on schroders.click, and asset management marketing copied from the genuine Schroders Japan site on schroders-jp.co.
  • Not accepted: no restricted country list was ever published. The whole operation was aimed at Japanese residents, in Japanese.
  • Age claim: 50 years in Japan. Its earliest evidenced infrastructure dates from 30 March 2024.
The genuine Schroder Investment Management (Japan) Limited company profile, showing that registration 関東財務局長(金商)第90号 and the Otemachi address belong to it.

Licences the broker publishes

Financial Services Agency of Japan (Kanto Local Finance Bureau)

VerifiedTier 1Limited relevance
A genuine Japanese financial instruments business registration, but it belongs to Schroder Investment Management (Japan) Limited, a separate Tokyo asset manager. It gave this website and its users no protection at all.
Protection: Full Japanese regulatory protection, for the registered company only. None of it extended to this operation or to anyone dealing with it.Official register

National Futures Association

UnverifiedTier 1
Not a real identifier. The number returns no record on the NFA register, and none of the 20 genuine Schroder group entities listed there carries it. A Japanese asset manager would have no reason to hold one in any case.
Protection: None. There is no membership behind this number.Official register
The FCA clone firm warning for Schroders, listing counterfeit websites and recording the genuine firm as Schroder Investment Management Limited at schroders.com.
The NFA register record for Schroder U S Holdings Inc, NFA ID 0263207, one of the genuine group identifiers that differ from the number the copycat site displayed.
The NFA register searched for Schroder, returning the genuine group entities. None of them carries the ID 0563282 shown on the copycat site.

Why we reached this verdict

How the evidence adds up.

Two independent regulators' records each show a false identity claim, and either one alone would carry this verdict.

  • It wore another company's registration. The number in the footer, 関東財務局長(金商)第90号, is the Japanese financial instruments business registration of Schroder Investment Management (Japan) Limited, a real asset manager at TOKYO TORCH Tokiwabashi Tower in Otemachi, registered since 30 September 2007. That firm's own disclosure and the Japanese regulator's register of financial instruments business operators both carry the number against that company. It was never this website's.
  • It also displayed a number that exists nowhere. NFA 0563282 returns no record on the National Futures Association's BASIC register. Searching that register for Schroder returns 20 group entities, including Schroders plc and Schroder Investment Management North America, and not one of them carries 0563282. A genuine Japanese asset manager would have no reason to advertise a US futures ID in the first place.
  • The product does not match the permission. schroders.click sold retail FX margin trading, complete with loss cut rules and swap point disclosures. The registration it borrowed is an asset management and Type II registration. Retail FX dealing in Japan requires a different registration entirely, and membership of the futures industry association.
  • The identity check fails on the domain. The FCA records the genuine firm as Schroder Investment Management Limited, reference 119348, website schroders.com. The genuine Japanese arm publishes at schroders.com as well. Neither schroders-jp.co nor schroders.click appears in any authorised listing.
  • The history was invented. The homepage advertised 50 years in Japan. Certificate records place the first appearance of schroders.click at 30 March 2024 and schroders-jp.co at 16 April 2024. The operation ran a matter of months, and both domains have since been abandoned.
  • The brand is a known target. The FCA has maintained a clone firm warning for Schroders since November 2019, naming more than twenty counterfeit domains, and Schroders publishes its own notice confirming fake sites and apps use its name. Those name other addresses rather than these two, so we treat them as strong context rather than a direct hit, but they establish an ongoing pattern that these two sites fit exactly.

No complaints could be tied to these particular addresses. That reflects how briefly they operated and the absence of any review footprint, not good conduct. Other counterfeit Schroders domains carry substantial reported losses, and we have deliberately not counted those here because they are separate addresses.

The other side

The strongest case in this broker’s favour.

We tried hard to find an innocent reading before settling on this verdict.

  • Could it have been a genuine regional site of the Schroders group? No. Schroders publishes its Japanese content at schroders.com, the FCA records schroders.com as the authorised firm's website, and Schroders has a standing notice telling people that sites outside schroders.com are not authorised by it. A real group arm would also not need to borrow the parent's registration number, because it would appear on the register in its own right.
  • Could it have been a rebrand or a migration? No transition notice exists anywhere, and the domains were surrendered rather than redirected to any successor. A genuine move leaves a forwarding trail.
  • Could the registration simply have been slow to update? No. The number is not pending or newly issued. It has been on the register against a different, long established company since 2007.
  • Could this be an unlucky name collision, a different firm that happens to be called Schroders? No. A collision shares a word. This site reproduced the exact Japanese legal entity name, the exact registration number, the same three industry association memberships and the parent's own marketing copy. That is reproduction, not coincidence.
  • Is the genuine Schroders implicated? Not at all, and this matters. Schroders plc is a long established, FCA authorised asset manager, and we found no regulator warning, no enforcement action and no evidence of fraud against the genuine group. It is the injured party. One third party broker directory has built a risk profile against the genuine schroders.com address and scored it poorly. That profile describes a different website from the two on this record, so nothing from it was used here.
  • In fairness to the operators, no victim has been identified. We found no first hand account of money lost at these two addresses. The case rests on documentary identity theft, which is proven, rather than on a proven loss.

What would change this

What we would need to see to revise the verdict.

This verdict rests on register records, so it would take register level evidence to move it.

  • The Japanese regulator's register showing 関東財務局長(金商)第90号 against an operator of schroders-jp.co rather than against Schroder Investment Management (Japan) Limited. That single fact would undo the central finding.
  • The National Futures Association's register returning a genuine member record for ID 0563282 tied to this operation.
  • Schroders publicly confirming that schroders-jp.co and schroders.click were its own properties, for instance by listing them among its official domains or withdrawing its impersonation notice in respect of them.
  • Evidence that the operator held a separate retail FX registration in its own name, which would at least make the product lawful even if the branding were still borrowed.
  • Conversely, a regulator naming either domain directly, or a documented victim account with amounts and dates, would harden an already strong case and remove the one gap we have been open about.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about this broker’s safety.

12 questions
Is schroders-jp.co a scam?

Yes. The site presented itself as Schroders while publishing the registration number of a different company, Schroder Investment Management (Japan) Limited, and an NFA number that matches no firm at all. It has since been abandoned and no longer resolves.

Is schroders-jp.co a fraud?

We do not make criminal findings, but we assess the risk of fraud as high. The FCA publishes a clone firm warning stating that fraudsters copy Schroders' details to convince people their firm is genuine, and this site did exactly that with a real registration number.

Is the real Schroders a scam?

No. Schroders plc is not a scam, and we found no evidence of fraud by the genuine group. It is a London listed asset manager authorised by the FCA as Schroder Investment Management Limited, reference 119348, and it trades at schroders.com. It is the victim of this impersonation.

Was this site regulated?

No. It held no licence of its own. It displayed the Japanese registration 関東財務局長(金商)第90号, which belongs to another company, and NFA 0563282, which returns no record on the National Futures Association register.

What is 関東財務局長(金商)第90号?

It is the Japanese financial instruments business registration of Schroder Investment Management (Japan) Limited, held since 30 September 2007. It is a genuine registration belonging to a genuine Tokyo asset manager, and it gave users of the copycat websites no protection whatsoever.

Can I still withdraw money from it?

Both domains have been given up and no longer resolve, so there is no site left to contact. If you deposited, go to your bank or card issuer about a recall or chargeback and report the matter to the police straight away.

Was my money ever safe there?

No. Client money protection in Japan attaches to the registered firm, and this operation was not registered. Anything deposited sat with an operator that had no licence and no identified legal entity.

Who was behind it?

We could not establish that. No genuine company, director or address was ever disclosed, both domains have been surrendered, and the only corporate identity the site published belonged to somebody else.

How old was this operation?

Its infrastructure first appears on 30 March 2024 for schroders.click and 16 April 2024 for schroders-jp.co. It ran for a matter of months. The site's claim of 50 years in Japan was borrowed from the genuine Schroders group's history.

Is this a clone?

Yes. It is a textbook clone: the real firm's name, registration number, industry memberships and marketing copy, reproduced on domains the real firm does not own. The FCA has run a clone firm warning for the Schroders brand since November 2019.

Did Schroders offer retail FX trading in Japan?

No. The genuine Schroders Japan business is asset management. The copycat site schroders.click advertised retail FX margin trading, which the borrowed registration does not permit and which would require a separate Japanese registration.

What should I check before depositing with any broker?

Find the firm on its regulator's own register and match the company name, not just the number. Check that the website address is the one the regulator or the firm's official site lists. A licence number printed in a footer proves nothing on its own, because it can be copied from a real firm in seconds.

What we recommend

The practical takeaway from everything above.

Our advice

Treat any site using the Schroders name outside schroders.com as unsafe until proven otherwise.

  • If you sent money to either address, act now. Contact your bank or card issuer and ask about a chargeback or recall, and report it to the police. In Japan you can also raise it with the Financial Services Agency consultation desk.
  • Report it to Schroders. The genuine firm runs a reporting channel at reportscams@schroders.com and a Tokyo line on 03-5293-1500. It actively collects these reports.
  • Check the register before you deposit anywhere. A Japanese firm must appear on the regulator's list of financial instruments business operators under its own name. Match the company name, not just the number, and be aware that a number on a website proves nothing by itself.
  • Expect the brand to reappear. These two domains are gone, but the Schroders name has been cloned repeatedly across many addresses since 2019. A new one carrying the same borrowed registration number should be treated the same way.
  • For our records: keep this entry flagged as a suspicious clone, keep the warning visible, and make clear on the page that the genuine Schroders group is not the subject.

This is an independent assessment of risk, not a legal ruling. Scores and verdicts follow the Wikilix broker-safety methodology and can change as new evidence appears.
