Register says
Registered, and licensed as a derivatives issuer since 20 January 2015

Finding

Two separate things that the broker's own wording understates. EC Markets Financial Limited is registered on the financial service providers register as FSP197465 from 14 February 2012, and separately holds a derivatives issuer licence from the Financial Markets Authority authorised on 20 January 2015, with retail and wholesale custodial client money services recorded. It is also a member of the Financial Dispute Resolution Service under number FM1028, giving New Zealand clients a redress route. The broker advertises this only as an FSPR number, which sells the licence short. Client protection: Moderate to strong: a genuine derivatives issuer licence plus an external dispute resolution scheme. Effective: 14 Feb 2012.

Verification note

The FMA-NZ register lists EC MARKETS FINANCIAL LIMITED as a Derivatives issuer. FSP number: the Financial Service Providers Register record reads "EC MARKETS FINANCIAL LIMITED (FSP197465) (NZBN: 9429031595070) [FSP (Entity)] Registered", and FSP197465 matches this licence's number, 197465. Three details on the same record support this. The FSP Name links to Companies Register company 2446590, the registration number of the broker's company "EC MARKETS FINANCIAL LIMITED" (New Zealand). That company's name is exactly the register's FSP Name in its own jurisdiction. And the record shows "Trading As: EC Markets", the broker's brand. The register records the licence as effective from 20 January 2015.

About this FMA licence

What this authorisation is, what it establishes, and what it leaves open.

EC MARKETS FINANCIAL LIMITED, not the EC Markets brand itself, is the company that New Zealand's Financial Markets Authority (FMA) has authorised as a derivatives issuer. The authorisation sits against FSP197465 on the Financial Service Providers Register, and that record shows an authorisation status of Licensed, with a date of authorisation of 20 January 2015.

New Zealand splits the answer across two bodies. The Financial Service Providers Register is run by the Companies Office, a business unit of MBIE, and registration on it is an administrative filing rather than conduct supervision. The derivatives issuer licence is the separate market services licence granted by the FMA under the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013, required before a firm may offer derivatives such as contracts for difference to retail investors. A licensed service line appears on the register only after the FMA approves the licence.

The entry shows that an FMA licence stands behind this FSP number. It is not a statement about solvency, pricing or conduct, and it does not reach every site the brand operates: the authorisation attaches to a New Zealand company, not to the group's entities registered elsewhere.

The record read here prints the legal name in capitals, FSP197465, NZBN 9429031595070, a trading name of EC Markets, an FSP status of Registered, a registration date of 14 February 2012 under the former names CTRL INVESTMENTS LIMITED and Mahifx Limited, an Auckland address, eight registered service lines, and the Financial Dispute Resolution Service as dispute scheme. It gives no expiry date and no telephone number.

To confirm, search 197465 or the company name on the Companies Office register and open the Financial Services tab, where the licensed line and its authorisation status appear. Suspension or cancellation of the licence, deregistration of the provider, or a change of company name would change the answer. No expiry is published, so the thing to watch is the status wording rather than a renewal date.

Written from what the issuing authority's own register published when we last read it. It describes a record, not the firm's conduct, and it is not advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about this licence

Answered from this register entry and the authority’s own record.

Most Popular Questions

Yes, the Mauritius client agreement reserves one, though it publishes no amount. Clause 13.5 allows the company to impose dormant account fees and make deductions where there has been no activity on an account for an extended period, and clauses 9.1 and 9.3 let charges be agreed from time to time rather than set out in a schedule.

The same clause 13.5 permits unclaimed balances to be released from the client bank accounts after a period of inactivity, with the company undertaking to make good valid claims except where they total 25 US dollars or less. Ask for the current figures in writing before leaving an account funded and idle.

It depends entirely on which EC Markets company you sign with, and for most clients the answer is no. Eligible clients of EC Markets Group Ltd, the FCA authorised United Kingdom company, may reach the Financial Ombudsman Service and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, and New Zealand clients of EC Markets Financial Limited have the Financial Dispute Resolution Service under number FM1028.

The Mauritius, South African and Seychelles licences carry no comparable compensation scheme, and the broker's own risk disclosure states that customers deal with the company at their own risk and are not protected by any statutory compensation arrangements. Since the global site is operated by the Mauritius company, that is the position that applies to clients who sign up through ecmarkets.com.

Nothing on the record supports calling EC Markets a scam. Six licences sit on the record, held by four group companies across Mauritius, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Seychelles, and each was confirmed on the issuing regulator's own register on 20 October 2026; the Mauritius company that operates the main site is recorded on that island's own company register under number 188565 GBC, checked the same day.

What deserves care is narrower. Clients of the global site contract with the Mauritius company, so the group's United Kingdom ombudsman and compensation access does not reach them, and the client agreement allows a withdrawal to be withheld and an account suspended for up to six months while a regulatory investigation is concluded.

By email at support@ecmarkets.com, through the enquiry form on the contact page, or through the live chat widget that runs on every page of the site. Complaints go to a separate address, compliance@ecmarkets.mu, which is published in the broker's complaints handling policy and in its Mauritius client agreement.

The contact page publishes no telephone number. EC Markets advertises 24 hour online customer service on its pricing page.

The account comparison ticks it on all three tiers, but the client agreement does not bear that out. Clause 18.5 of the Mauritius client agreement requires you to indemnify the company for any debit balance on your account, and clause 14.12 has you confirm you are willing and financially able to sustain more than the total loss of your funds.

The related risk settings are the same across the tiers: a margin call at 50%, a stop out at 30% and a maximum of 50 lots per open order. Treat the tick as a marketing statement until the company confirms in writing which entity applies it and on what terms.

Yes, on request, but not on every tier. The account comparison marks swap free as available on the STD and ECN accounts and not available on the PRO account.

It is the one feature in that comparison the PRO tier does not get. The instrument range, the leverage ladder and negative balance protection are the same on all three.

EC Markets advertises withdrawals credited within two hours, alongside a 98.5% withdrawal completion rate. Both are site-wide marketing claims attached to no particular channel, and the client agreement commits to no timeframe at all.

Two clauses are worth reading before funding an account. Clause 21.13 will not act on a withdrawal to bank details other than the ones you originally provided, or on one that would take your margin below what your open positions require. Clause 21.14 allows EC Markets to withhold all or part of a payment and suspend the account for up to six months while it concludes a regulatory investigation.

EC Markets publishes no list of payment methods on its website, and three of its own documents give three different answers. The Mauritius client agreement, at clause 4.9, requires margin to be paid in cash by bank transfer into the segregated client bank account or an equivalent client money digital wallet; the risk disclosure describes credit card, wire transfer and virtual card, with withdrawals made on a source to source basis; the client onboarding document says all clients fund by bank transfer, naming SBM Bank (Mauritius) Ltd as the primary account.

In practice funding happens inside the client portal once your account is approved, and the EC Markets App offers deposits and withdrawals from inside the app. Clause 21.13 will not act on a withdrawal to bank details other than the ones you originally provided.

Three: STD, ECN and PRO. STD and ECN both start at 10 US dollars; PRO starts at 5,000 US dollars.

Apart from the minimum deposit, the spread and the commission, the tiers are identical: the same instruments, leverage to 1:1000, a 0.01 lot minimum, a 50 lot maximum per open order, US dollar accounts, market execution, a 50% margin call, a 30% stop out and negative balance protection.

It depends on the account. STD has spreads from 1.0 pips and no commission. ECN has spreads from 0.0 pips plus a commission of 1.50 US dollars per lot per side. PRO has spreads from 0.0 pips and no commission, and the broker states that tier averages 0.1 pips on EUR/USD with pricing taken directly from its liquidity provider.

Swap rates are adjusted daily at 00:00 GMT+2, and a position carried from Wednesday to Thursday is charged three days of interest. Beyond those, EC Markets publishes no fee schedule.

Up to 1:1000, but not on everything. The published ladder runs to 1:1000 on major and minor currency pairs and on metals, 1:500 on indices, 1:400 on energies, 1:200 on cryptocurrencies and 1:100 on exotic currency pairs.

It is a fixed model that does not step down as account equity or volume grows, and it is the same on all three account tiers. EC Markets reserves the right to apply a maximum of 1:30 where it considers that necessary, and clients can set their own leverage lower in their account settings.

The main site at ecmarkets.com is operated by EC Markets Limited, a Mauritius company, which its own footer states outright. That company appears on the Mauritius Financial Services Commission's online public register under company number 188565 GBC, at The Cyberati Lounge, The Catalyst, 40 Cybercity, Ebene.

EC Markets is a brand shared by six companies rather than one firm: EC Markets Group Ltd in England and Wales (07601714) holds the FCA authorisation and serves the United Kingdom site, EC Markets Financial Limited in New Zealand (2446590) holds the Australian, New Zealand and South African licences, EC Markets Limited (Seychelles) (8413793-1) serves ecmarkets.sc, and EC Markets Securities & Financial Promotion L.L.C in Dubai (2430405) and EC Markets Global Ltd in England and Wales (12193701) complete the group. Read the footer of whichever site you are on before funding an account, because that is where the contracting company is named.

EC Markets offers forex pairs, precious metals, energies, indices, cryptocurrencies and stocks, which the broker describes as more than 100 instruments. On the record that breaks down as roughly 48 currency pairs, 37 CFDs and 7 cryptocurrencies.

The same asset classes are available on all three account tiers; what changes between them is the spread, the commission and the minimum deposit, not the instrument range.

The minimum deposit is 10 US dollars on the STD and the ECN account. The PRO account requires 5,000 US dollars.

Accounts are denominated in US dollars and the minimum trade size on every tier is 0.01 lots. EC Markets publishes no payment method list on its website, and its own documents disagree on the funding routes it accepts, so settle the deposit channel with the company before you transfer anything.

EC Markets offers MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and its own EC Markets App. MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 run on Windows and Mac desktop and on iOS and Android, and are downloaded from the broker's client portal at crm.ecmarkets.com.

The EC Markets App is an iOS and Android app that adds watchlists, in-app market news and analysis, price and order alerts, and deposits and withdrawals from inside the app. All three account tiers list the same MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 access.

Yes. Six licences sit on the EC Markets record, held by four group companies, and each was confirmed on the issuing regulator's own register on 20 October 2026: the Mauritius Financial Services Commission (an Investment Dealer licence, Full Service Dealer excluding Underwriting, granted 20 June 2022, which the broker publishes as GB21200130), the Financial Conduct Authority (firm reference 571881, Authorised), ASIC (AFSL 414198), the New Zealand Financial Markets Authority (derivatives issuer under FSP197465), the FSCA (FSP 51886) and the Seychelles Financial Services Authority, whose securities dealer list carries the company for that activity.

Client fund protection depends on which company you sign with. The Mauritius client agreement holds client money in a segregated client money bank account, an equivalent digital wallet or a client transaction account, and permits it to be held outside Mauritius where protection may be weaker. Eligible clients of the FCA authorised United Kingdom company may reach the Financial Ombudsman Service and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, and New Zealand clients have the Financial Dispute Resolution Service, while the broker's own risk disclosure states that customers are not protected by any statutory compensation arrangements.

Licence FSP197465 was issued by Financial Markets Authority (FMA), the financial authority for New Zealand.
EC Markets holds this FMA licence. A licence on record means the authority published an entry; it is not an endorsement.
We located this entry on the FMA register. Note that confirming a register ENTRY is not the same as confirming a live licence — the register’s own wording on this page is what states its current standing.
The FMA register prints it under EC MARKETS FINANCIAL LIMITED, not EC Markets. Licences are often held by a subsidiary rather than the trading brand, which is why searching a register for the brand alone can return nothing.
Wikilix rates FMA tier 2: a well-established regime with real supervision, usually with lower compensation limits than a tier-1 authority.
This page links straight to the FMA register. Search it for FSP197465, and for the name EC MARKETS FINANCIAL LIMITED rather than the trading brand.
EC Markets has 5 other licences on record with Wikilix, across 5 jurisdictions. They are listed further down this page.
